Lanyard vs Card Holder: Which Do You Need?
Lanyard or card holder? Here is the honest answer. They are not rivals. A lanyard is the strap. A card holder is the case that holds the card. Most teams use both together.
But not every setup needs a holder. Sometimes a lanyard and a bare card are enough. This guide clears up the difference. It shows when you need a holder. And it helps you pick the right ID setup for your team.

What Is a Lanyard?
A lanyard is a fabric strap worn around the neck. It holds an ID card, a badge, or keys. Staff can grab the card fast to tap a door.
The strap also shows your logo all day. So it works as ID and as light branding. You can print it in full color or with a single logo. Common materials are polyester, nylon, woven, reflective, and eco RPET.

What Is a Card Holder?
A card holder is a case for the ID card. It holds and protects the card. It keeps the card clean and easy to read.
The holder also makes the card easy to swap. You slide one card out and another in. No reprint needed. This helps at events where passes change often.

They Work Together, Not Against Each Other
Here is the part most guides miss. A full ID setup is not one item. It is a few parts that work as a set:

So "lanyard vs card holder" is often the wrong question. The real question is: which of these parts do I need? For most teams, the answer is a strap plus a holder plus a card.
Think of it like a phone and a case. The phone still works with no case. But the case keeps it safe. A card holder does the same job for your ID card.
When Do You Need a Card Holder?
Not every setup needs a holder. Here is a simple way to decide.
You need a card holder when:

A PVC card is tough on its own. It is waterproof and hard to bend. So a slotted PVC card can clip straight to the strap. That saves you the holder cost. But if staff handle the card all day, a holder still guards it.
Types of Card Holders — Which One Fits?
Card holders come in a few styles. Each suits a different need. Here are the main ones.
Soft PVC holder. This is a flexible, clear sleeve. It is low cost and light. It suits everyday use and big orders.
Hard plastic holder. This is a rigid case. It guards the card best. It suits a daily staff ID that must last. A common size is about 90 × 60mm.
A6 holder. This is a larger holder, about 108 × 155mm. It fits event passes, programs, or bigger cards. You often see it at big events.
Double pocket holder. This holds two cards at once. Handy when staff carry an ID and an access card.
PU leather holder. This adds a smart, posh look. It suits VIP passes or a senior staff ID.
One key point. The holder must fit the card. Most ID cards use the CR80 size. That is about 85.6 × 54mm, the same as a bank card. Match the holder to the card first.
Some holders can carry your brand too. Premium and PU leather holders can be debossed. Debossed means your logo is pressed into the surface. This gives a clean, subtle branding touch.

What About a Badge Reel?
A badge reel is also called a pull reel or yoyo. It is a small case with a spring cord inside. Staff pull the card out to tap a door. Then the cord snaps it back.
This is a great add-on for card-tap access. Staff do not need to bend down or lift the whole strap. It keeps the card handy and neat.

Does Adding a Card Holder Cost More?
Yes, a holder adds a small cost per piece. The type changes the price. A soft PVC holder costs less than a hard case or a PU leather one.
But a holder can save money over time. It protects the card from damage. So you reprint cards less often. For daily staff IDs, that trade is often worth it.

Card holders come two ways. One holds the card upright. One holds it sideways.
The upright type is portrait. The sideways type is landscape. Pick the one that fits your card design.
